Word came down the John Blake information water slide late Monday that Texas had officially signed four players to minor-league deals: Chi Chi Gonzalez, Anthony Gose, David Hurlbut, and Christian Lopes. All four will also receive invites to do Spring Training with the big-league club (though Chi Chi is going to miss most—if not all—of the 2018 season, so that’s just a formality).
Gonzalez was one of four players non-tendered by the Rangers on Friday. Gose will play both ways, as we told you on Friday (we also got some more information on Gose from Emily Waldon in the first edition of the Upset Update.)
I’m sorry if 28-year-old left-handed pitcher David Hurlbut pronounces his name in any way besides the obvious, because there’s a 0% chance I can re-train my brain to read it any way but all-caps HURL-BUTT. He has a 512/160 K/BB tally in 724⅓ innings over seven seasons, all with Twins affiliates. Lopes is a 25-year-old infielder who has spent six seasons in the Blue Jays system, and doesn’t have a lot of pop or speed, but hits for a reasonable average for a AAAA guy. Neither player has made his big-league debut.
