The Dallas Stars released RJ Umberger from his professional tryout contract on Wednesday.
Umberger had been trying to make an NHL comeback after sitting out all of last season.
Umberger played in three preseason games with Dallas, during that time he didn’t have any points and had eight shots. He had his best preseason showing in a 4-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Monday.
Stars coach Ken Hitchcock had been complimentary of Umberger yesterday morning.
“He’s gotten better and better as camp goes,” Hitchcock said before a 4-1 win against the Minnesota Wild. “Now you go to look at this is when management has to come into play here. That’s why we’re gonna look at guys tonight and see what we evaluate. And obviously he’s made a good account of himself, and he’s got better and better and more and more in game shape. He was the guy that was out the longest, he sat out the whole year him and Janmark, so for me it’s how does Jim want to build this roster.”
“And you know what goes on this time of year all the workings behind the scenes and all the talk with the general managers,” Hitchcock added. “We’ll see what he does over the next few days.”
