CHICAGO — The Dallas Stars picked left wing Jason Robertson with the eighth pick of the second round (No. 39 overall) on Saturday morning.
A high-scoring winger from the Kingston Frontenacs, Robertson is a bit of a steal for Dallas at No. 39. He was projected as a late-first round pick, but concerns about his skating may have dropped him out of the first round.
“I wasn’t nervous, I was more anxious,” Robertson said of the wait. “It’s really nice to finally get there.”
Here was my scouting report on Robertson from the draft guide:
Jason Robertson’s shot is going to open his door to an NHL opportunity. The lefty who can play either wing is a sniper with a hard and accurate shot that can score from anywhere — he had 42 goals and 81 points this season for Kingston. Robertson is also skilled with the puck and can create chances for his teammates, and there were times this season in the OHL where he put the team on his back and delivered a win. Robertson’s skating might keep him out of the first round. It’s one thing to have an all-world shot, it’s another thing to have the mobility and quickness to use it at the NHL level. Robertson also needs to work on his fitness and add some strength to be able to compete at the next level.
I’ll have more on Robertson later today.
