Sunday’s game against the Colorado Avalanche had several built-in excuses available.
It was the second game of a back-to-back, it was the third game in four nights, and it was a one-off trip to Denver were altitude can zap a visiting team’s energy as the game progresses.
While it wouldn’t have been acceptable, it would have been understandable if the Dallas Stars lost to the Avalanche after a thrilling home-and-home overtime series with the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night.
But the Stars didn’t need any excuses, and Tyler Seguin set the tone when he forced a turnover and scored an unassisted goal at 14:44 of the opening period. Alexander Radulov added another element to the highlight when he leveled his center with a huge bearhug or bodycheck.
“I saw him coming it hot and set to brace myself,” Seguin said.

That goal gave the Stars a spark. They went from playing a competent road game in Denver — a rarity in recent history — to a winning one, and Seguin continued to have an impact one night after playing more than 28 minutes in the victory against Chicago.
With 50 seconds left in the period Seguin scored his second goal, giving the Stars the needed cushion and space they needed to secure a fifth-straight win.
Unfortunately Seguin never completed the hat trick, because it would have been fascinating to see if fans would have thrown Sunday’s unique giveaway onto the ice in Colorado.

In addition to his goals, Seguin also was dominant on face-offs and won 13 of his 17 draws, while racking up more than 20 minutes of ice time.
