Dallas / Fort Worth is one of the best sports markets in the entire world. I’m not just saying that because I grew up here and write about the Rangers, either. I’ve traveled enough and listened to enough local sports radio in other places to know: we’ve got it good here. When we started the Upset, our goal was to provide something very specific for a market we knew deserved it: quality sports writing with no ads, and no auto-play videos.
You guys proved us right. From day one, we exceeded every goal we set. We outdid our first-day goals, first week goals, first month goals, and …well, we only launched two months ago.
Today, we’re announcing another step, one that happened much earlier than we ever expected. We’re teaming up with The Athletic and moving to TheAthletic.com/DFW. The whole team is going: myself, Sean Shapiro, Jeff Cavanaugh and Kevin Turner. But The Athletic has also landed two of the biggest fish in DFW sports: Jamey Newberg and Bob Sturm.
And there’s more: Or Moyal—my old boss at WFAA—is joining the team as managing editor. The guy that took a risk and hired a touring songwriter to write about baseball is bringing that optimism and vision to The Athletic. More hires will be announced in coming weeks, but when we first hatched the plan, this is pretty much the dream team we thought it would take years to assemble. Again, we’re ahead of our goals.
Starting today, there will be no new content on TheUpsetSports.com as we prepare for launch at TheAthletic.com/DFW on February 12th. And don’t worry, you’re part of the team, too—your current subscription will be honored with The Athletic and grant you access to all their content for the remainder of your billing period. Subscribers will be getting an e-mail within the next few days to explain the next steps.
The coverage of your DFW teams won’t change, other than this: with the addition of Sturm and Newberg, it will only get better. In addition to our coverage of your favorite DFW teams, you’ll also have access to all of The Athletic’s coverage: every city, every team they cover (and that number grew today, beyond just us: the Athletic is also launching in New York City and Cincinnati). And for those of you who asked us about an app, well: problem solved! (*ahem* for Android users: problem also solved!)
We couldn’t have done this without you. We’re all excited about what’s to come with The Athletic. We hope to see you over there in just a few days!
-Levi
p.s. If you’re already a subscriber to The Athletic, and would like a refund for your subscription to The Upset, please get in touch at support@theupsetsports.com – we think our sports coverage will continue to be great, but there’s no sense double-charging you for it.

Congrats to all of you – the Upset has been great so far and the Athletic has a fantastic looking lineup.

The Athletic knew y’all had a good thing going and they made the right choice. So happy for this group of writers that I enjoy being rewarded for their talent!
Robert Miller says
At what point will my Upset subscription no longer auto bill? I’m happy to move over to The Athletic and I’m just trying to figure out timing.
Congrats on the move!

I got an email from paypal saying the Upset suspended my payment this morning – not sure if this move has anything to do with it, but I assume it does.
The Upset Sports says
Hi Robert! All of our auto-bill processes have been suspended, so there should not be any further charges from The Upset (though you should still be able to access the content). In the next few days you will be receiving an email with instructions on how to transfer your active subscription over to The Athletic. Let us know if you have any other questions!

This is fantastic. Congrats to all the team! Glad I’m getting to ride along!

Excellent news! Congrats

My only request is that the writer’s room is preserved – I’ve loved all the coverage on this site, and also love the Athletic. That said, I’ve loved the non-sports (or sports adjacent) stories as much as the great sports writing.
Levi Weaver says
It’ll all be here forever, preserved as a museum to an absurdly specific moment in time.
Michael Luna says
Well, probably not forever….

Congrats, Levi! Of course, the Rangers will now probably make a whole bunch of moves between now and the 12th, right? 😉
Levi Weaver says
That’s the way baseball go.
J.D. Becker says
Congratulations, do you know if the monthly price will be the same or does it double now?
Nathan McLain says
Selling out after just two months? Nice! 😉
Looking forward to the move as I’ve definitely enjoyed The Upset. And I guess Sturm and Jayme have a little something.

Any idea if we can sign up for the pre-sale special (I’m a sucker for t-shirts) and have our current subscription tacked on to it?
