Gurianov and Hintz score as Stars prospects fall against Wild

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — The Dallas Stars prospects played their best game of the tournament in a 4-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Monday.

Roope Hintz and Denis Gurianov each scored in the loss, while free agent invite Jeremy Brodeur made 28 saves for the Stars.

“Today’s team was a totally different team from day one,” Texas Stars coach Derek Laxdal said. “Can’t ask for more than that from that group.”

Earlier in the tournament the Stars bigger name prospects had a disappointing performance. Gurianov had been a non-factor, while Jason Robertson had been invisible. Roope Hintz had been improving, but hadn’t reached a higher level yet.

But things were different on Monday.

“Roope Hintz and Denis Gurianov, that’s what we expect to see,” Laxdal said. “They were outstanding. That’s the Denis Gurianov we need to see on a consistent basis, he was unbelievable … Robertson you saw some of that sneaky goal scoring skill.”

Minnesota built a 2-0 lead on power play goals late in the first period and early in the second. Joel Eriksson Ek then gave the Wild a 3-0 lead before the Stars countered.

Hintz scored at 6:28 of the second period on a feed from Robertson. Robertson then had a second assist when Gurianov scored 15 seconds into the third period on a breakaway.

Minnesota put the game out of reach at 14:32 of the third period when Matt Bradley scored.

Dallas finished last in their group and will play in the seventh-place game at 3 p.m. (2 p.m. CT) on Tuesday.

Martenet out

Chris Martenet missed the game due to illness and won’t play on Tuesday.

With Martenet out the Stars put Shane Hanna back in the lineup and the AHL-contracted defender was minus-2 with four shots.

Brodeur plays well

Brodeur doesn’t have a future with the Stars, but he had a nice showing for the scouts in attendance on Monday.

Of his 28 saves, 12 came in the first period as he kept the Stars in the game and wasn’t beat until Minnesota scored as a 5-on-3 power play was expiring.

Landon Bow will get the start on Tuesday and will try to bounce back after allowing 13 goals in his first two starts.
