Hurricanes storm past Stars 5-1 on Teravainen natural hat trick

Looking to improve their road record (3-5-0), the Dallas Stars began their 3-game sojourn on the east coast on Monday night against the Carolina Hurricanes without their top penalty killer, Marc Methot. Sporting a reconfigured lineup that had incredible success against the New York Islanders last Friday, but would be juggled considerably during this game, the Stars began their first game of a back-to-back set in Raleigh against a team they had won six straight.

Dallas did not come prepared for Teuvo Teravainen, who buried the Stars late in the game with a natural hat trick, his first in the NHL. Ben Bishop (.846 SV%) did not have the showing that he had hoped, but didn’t get much help. The opposing goaltender, Scott Darling, gave his team a solid presence in net and finished with 25 saves on 26 shots.

The Stars’ vaunted power play got some burn at the beginning of the game as the Hurricanes committed a delay of game penalty. They generated a few good looks, including one from Alexander Radulov that rang off the post, but nothing more. The opportunity did give Dallas some extended time with the puck after the penalty expired, and perhaps they got too confident.

Radek Faksa rushed into the offensive zone and left a drop pass for a trailing John Klingberg. Klingberg was trailing further than Faksa thought, and it created a counter-attack for Carolina. A 2-on-1 turned into breakaway when Esa Lindell attempted to take out his man but fell down, and Sebastian Aho was all alone for an easy opportunity to beat Ben Bishop.

Jeff Skinner, who had an excellent game against the Stars the last time these two teams met, nearly had a breakaway goal. A back checking Stephen Johns forced Skinner to attempt a back-hand shot, which was easily handled by Bishop. Mattias Janmark followed up with a back-hander of his own that nearly dribbled in past Scott Darling.

The Stars faced a stiff test on the penalty kill before the end of the first period, as they were already without an injured Methot, and Dan Hamhuis, who committed the penalty. Halfway through the penalty, Janmark drew a tripping minor to even things up.

Known to give up goals at the end of period, the Stars nearly allowed one in the waning seconds of the first when Josh Jooris had the puck on his stick in the slot with no defender around him. Tyler Seguin made an important defensive play by body checking Jooris and separating him from the puck.

After the Stars killed another penalty, Brock McGinn nearly got his back-hander to go early in the second period. It was initially ruled a goal, and the horn sounded. After further review, the Stars caught a break as the puck rang off of one pipe, ricocheted over to the other pipe, and managed to just avoid going over the line in the crease.

Gemel Smith, who is living the dream on the top line, committed a holding minor to give the Hurricanes their third power play of the night. Much like the sequence in the first period, the Stars were able to even things up by drawing a penalty of their own. After getting their man back, the Stars set up in the offensive zone and went to work. Radulov kept his point streak alive at eight straight games, and scored off of some beautiful puck movement in which everyone was involved. Seguin made the play work as he stayed with his own rebound, skated behind the net, and found Radulov.

Bishop had to bear down and come up with several key saves in the last five minutes of the second period. Because of his poise and control of the crease the Stars went into the locker room with a tie game at second intermission.

The penalty kill for the Stars finally broke down early in the third period. After a sequence of solid net-minding, Bishop wasn’t able to find the puck through a screen and was beat high on his glove side by  Teravainen. Teravainen, who finished the game with a natural hat trick and an assist, then gave his team some breathing room in the game with another goal from the high point. Klingberg was on the back check and accidentally screened Bishop, who would’ve made a routine save. The puck did appear to redirect slightly off of Klingberg.

Teravainen put the finishing touches on the game with his third straight goal on the night. This time, the Stars turned the puck over in their own zone and created a 3-on-1 for the Hurricanes. Teravainen finished the play with a one-timer from the slot. Skinner added insult to injury with an unnecessary late goal with three seconds left to put a punctuation on a poor showing for Dallas.

The Stars can ill afford to keep losing away from the American Airlines Center. They square off against the Florida Panther on Tuesday on what should be considered a must-win game with Tampa Bay looming in a few days.
