Three days in the books at the Senior Bowl and I’ve once again shouldered the burden of watching guys practice sports on my television for five hours so that you don’t have to. Without further ado, we recap!
- Cowboys are short a starting left guard and I’ve seen two guys in Mobile that could definitely step in and do that job. Will Hernandez from UTEP has had an outstanding three days of practice. Isaiah Wynn from Georgia was really good as well. Wynn was the left tackle at Georgia but when you measure in at 6’2″ you become a prime candidate to move inside and play guard. He did that this week and was impressive.
- Marcus Davenport, the DE from UTSA, finally had the day the everyone was waiting for. In the team portion he was disruptive as a rusher off the edge. He does a better job from a standup start than a three point stance. It’s still crazy to talk about him as a top 10 or 15 pick but he did flash the athletic ability that helps him get to the passer that we’d been waiting for.
- Josh Allen had his best day by far today. Did a nice job both in red zone work and in the ‘third down’ portion of team. Everyone knows he has the arm; his accuracy was much more consistent today than either of the prior two days.
- Baker Mayfield was the best QB in Mobile. He had a great week of practice. Hope he plays in the actual game.
- The lesser-knowns at QB that showed some NFL football traits were Mike White (Western Kentucky) and Kyle Lauletta (Richmond).
- OU EDGE Ogbonnia Okoronkwo is a really good player. He’s undersized at just over 240 pounds but he was able to win with power, edge speed and a spin move in pass rush drills. The power is the important one. A lot of 3-4 teams could definitely stand him up and play him at linebacker, but he was also able to overpower offensive tackles from a three point stance.
- Arizona State RB Kalen Ballage is a chess piece. I don’t know that he’s a starting three-down back in the league, but I know that he’s a monster catching the ball out of the backfield. If the Cowboys want mid-to-late rounds back that they can throw the ball to, he’d be a great choice. Linebackers and safeties have no chance to cover the guy and he has easy hands.
- DaeSean Hamilton from Penn State lo0ked like the best route runner at the Senior Bowl. He regularly won off the line of scrimmage and showed nice feet and an ability to change speed and direction to get separation.
- James Washington (Oklahoma State WR) helped himself, showing some route running ability over the course of the week.
- The guy who made the most money in Mobile might have been OT Alex Cappa from Humboldt State. He’s a small school guy who wasn’t intimidated or outmatched playing against this competition. He might have played his way into the 2nd day of the draft.
- Jaylen Samuels was a do-everything player at Louisville that has a place in the NFL somewhere. He’s a RB/FB/TE blend. Someone will find a way to get him the ball in mismatch situations.
- Penn State TE Mike Gesicki did a nice job being able to separate against safeties and use his big body and length to make some nice plays. I wouldn’t mind a star on his helmet.
- Wisconsin TE Troy Fumagalli is missing the index finger on his left hand and it doesn’t bother him catching a bit. He was born with amniotic band syndrome, the same thing Shaquem Griffin (UCF LB) was born with. He does a nice job using his big body to make plays in traffic but his athleticism is a question mark to me.
Hopefully there’s some names in these recaps that end up as Cowboys because you aren’t getting the minutes you spend reading this back. Cheers.
