DALLAS — During warmups Patrick Sharp thought he had made a mistake by hitting Kari Lehtonen with a high shot, turns out it may have sparked the Dallas Stars second shutout of the season.
“He was ready to go today, maybe because it was I hit him up high in warmups,” Sharp said. “I was a little worried, too. Then he made those first couple saves and I was breathing a little bit easier. What a game for him.”
Lehtonen said it happens sometimes.
“Woke me up,” Lehtonen said. “It woke the beast.”
Lehtonen was good when he had to be and stopped all 30 shots. He made his most difficult save in the first period on Logan Couture with his left toe.
It was the Stars’ second shutout of the season and the first since Lehtonen made 23 saves in a 3-0 win against the Colorado Avalanche on Dec. 3.
It was the Stars first 1-0 shutout in more than five years, and Lehtonen made sure to point out that he is now 2-for-2 in shutouts in games that he wears a specialty mask for military appreciation.
