There were a couple salary cap questions that came up this week as the Dallas Stars were close to their spending limit and had to wait before calling up Curtis McKenzie from the AHL.
While there are some readers who already understand this, I wanted to clarify a couple key points for the future that will make future cap situations a bit easier to understand:
— You don’t get cap relief for putting a player on injured reserve. There were a couple questions and comments about how the Stars could save cap space by putting Tyler Pitlick on injured reserve, that is false. You only get cap relief with a long-term IR move, which requires player to miss at least 21 games.
— You can’t go over the salary cap. The McKenzie move made it look like the Stars went over the cap on third-party sites like CapFriendly yesterday, that is not allowed and it was a clerical error by CapFriendly. The Stars had more space than CapFriendly has listed until it was corrected by the site this morning.
— This is not a slight on CapFriendly. It’s a tool I use quite often and they do a great job of tracking down contracts and staying factual, I know for a fact when they saw an error last night they reached out to the proper in the Stars organization to find where their numbers were slightly off.
— Overall the salary cap is confusing at times, and it’s not all laid out in black-and-white in the CBA.
Point shines, again
Earlier this week I did a story on Stars goalie prospect and Colgate sophomore Colton Point, who is leading the NCAA in both save percentage and goals against average amongst starting goalies.
If you haven’t read that story on Point, check it out here.
Last night Point was the backbone of a 2-1 upset against No. 5 Harvard. You can watch the highlights here:

Point now has a 1.07 goals against average and .965 save percentage and is undefeated (5-04) in nine starts.
Housekeeping Notes
— I will be heading over to Allen this evening to watch the Idaho Steelheads, the Stars ECHL affiliate. I will have a story/notes from watching Stars prospects Chris Martenet and Philippe Desrosiers.
