Trevor Daley is finally returning to the American Airlines Center, meaning the Stars will finally get to run the tape on a tribute video this evening.
Daley played for the Stars from 2003 to 2015 before being traded to the Chicago Blackhawks. He was traded from Chicago to the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2015-16 season and missed his chance to return to Texas. Last season he was with Pittsburgh for the entire season, but was injured and wasn’t traveling when the Penguins visited Dallas.
While Daley was a fan favorite in Dallas, he also helped Stars forward Gemel Smith keep his career on track. Smith’s family had their financial struggles when he was growing up, paying for four hockey players isn’t cheap and the family needed help tracking down equipment.
Daley had a connection with Smith’s coach, and after a phone call the future Stars’ winger was practicing and playing in shoulder pads and skates courtesy of Daley.
“I’m the type of guy that if I can help out anybody, I am more than willing to,”Daley said at the time. “When you play this sport, it’s expensive. It’s not like you just go out on a field and do it. It does take a lot of resources to play hockey. I’m in a position where I am able to help out, and I try to when I can.”
Housekeeping notes
– Expect the Stars to make a forward call-up at some point today, likely Remi Elie or Jason Dickinson.
– Julius Honka could make his season debut tonight, depending on the status of Dan Hamhuis injured groin.
