Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill said he was going to figure out his final roster at some point on Monday or Tuesday, thanks to wavier we are going to get an inside look to his thought around 11 a.m. (noon ET) today.
NHL teams need to submit their opening-night, salary-cap compliant roster by 5 p.m. ET on Tuesday. That means if the Stars plan to send a non-waiver exempt player to the AHL they’d have to place that player on waivers today.
If the Stars haven’t waived anyone, that means they’ll carry eight defenders into opening night and Julius Honka will be sent to the AHL. It would also mean none of the young forwards have made the opening night roster, and the Stars won’t have a rookie on the roster to open the season.
But if the Stars waive a player, that means a young player has made the team. If Greg Pateryn or Patrik Nemeth are on waivers today, that would mean Honka will likely be on the opening-night roster. If Curtis McKenzie is on waivers that would mean that Remi Elie has likely won the final roster spot at forward.
The Stars, or course, aren’t the only team impacted by this. It’s going to be a busy day on the waiver wire and you could see some player movement because of it.
Strader Strong
Yesterday was an extremely sad day for the Stars family when Dave Strader passed away at 62.
Because of the timing of his sickness I only knew Dave in a limited capacity. But even in that limited relationship, he was one of the kindest and most thoughtful human beings. He was the person that would remember your name and what you were working on, and then ask you about it three or four months later unprompted. He really cared about everyone and the world was better for it.
I tried to write a little about Dave at this site yesterday, which you can read here.
Cancer sucks, I can’t really put it more eloquently than that.
Housekeeping Notes
– I ended up pushing back the subscriber story on Alexander Radulov back a day. It will come out this evening.
– There are still a handful of spots in a fantasy hockey league. The draft will be tomorrow and those who have already claimed a spot will be hearing from me today. If you want a spot send me a direct message on Twitter.
Today’s Schedule
The Stars have off today before resuming practice on Tuesday.
