Anaheim Ducks forward, and former Dallas Star, Patrick Eaves has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare condition in which the immune system attacks the body through the peripheral nervous system.
The Ducks made the announcement Monday as Eaves, who went to see doctors last week after feeling weak, was admitted to the intensive care unit until his condition stabilized over the weekend.
“I want to thank Dr. Robert Watkins Sr. and Dr. Danny Benmoshe for their early diagnosis of my condition, along with the proactive Ducks medical team,” Eaves said in a statement. “Thanks to them and the incredible nurses at Hoag Hospital, I’m on the road to recovery. I’ve received tremendous amount of support over the last few days, most importantly from my family, friends and teammates. I’m determined to fully overcome this and return to the ice as soon as possible.”
The cause of Guillain-Barré syndrome is unknown, but it could be triggered by an infection. Treatment with a mix of antibodies or removing and treating blood plasma can help in therapy. Depending on the severity, recovery could take weeks or longer. Some victims have permanent weakness.
Eaves was always one of the more popular teammates when he played for the Stars, and Mattias Janmark tweeted words of support on Monday.

Road Trip
After eight games the Dallas Stars are 5-3 and currently have the NHL’s longest win streak with four consecutive victories.
Now they need to prove they can continue that success during a five-game, 11-day road trip that starts in Denver tonight.
“It’s good to get on the road this early, it’s good to get away as a group and get these road games out of the way early like this,” Jason Spezza said on Monday. “This is an opportunity where you can prove you’re a good team, and that’s a great opportunity.”
This road trip will also be the next opportunity for Kari Lehtonen to play a game.
On Monday Stars head coach Ken Hitchcock said that Ben Bishop will start the next two games, while Lehtonen will start against the Calgary Flames on Friday on the back end of a back-to-back.
Lehtonen has just two appearances and one start this season, coming in a loss to the St. Louis Blues on Oct. 7.
