The Dallas Stars couldn’t make the Tri-State road trip one to remember and they had to settle for five points out of a potential eight in the standings. They lost on the second night of a back-to-back against the Flyers 2-1.
In the first period, Gemel Smith got the Stars on the board early when his wrist shot beat Brian Elliot in the high corner on the blocker side. The early going saw two instances of 4-on-4 play. The Stars tested Elliot with a few pucks on net on their late period power play, but Elliot held serve.
Ben Bishop was back in the crease for the Stars after a string of starts from Kari Lehtonen and looked sharp until the second period. The multitude of penalties caught up to the Stars as Shayne Gostisbehere cheated down from the point and dove to put the puck in a high corner after a monster shift from the Flyers. Bishop was critical in keeping the game at even during the second period. The Flyers held onto the puck and were foiling any of the Stars’ attempts at offense with crisp back checking.
The Stars had two important penalty kills in the third period to stay in the game. Tyler Pitlick had a breakaway opportunity and tried to go back hand, but Elliot fended him off. Bishop and Elliot were both brilliant for their teams in the second half of the game to send it to overtime.
The teams traded shots off the post in the first half of overtime. Alexander Radulov committed a penalty with a minute and a half to go to give the Flyers the man advantage. Gostisbehere scored the game winning goal on the power play to end the game.
Play of the Game
The second power play goal of the game for Shayne Gostisbehere gave his team the victory over the road-weary Stars. He crept in from the point with a wrist shot that gave Ben Bishop a loss he didn’t deserve.
The Upset Three Stars of the Game
1. Shayne Gostisbehere (2 PPG) – Gostisbehere scored the game winning goal in overtime on the power play. He also had a brilliant goal in the second period to even the game up.
2. Ben Bishop (28 saves on 30 shots) – Bishop didn’t deserve this loss on his ledger. He did everything his team could’ve asked and was instrumental in sending the game to overtime.
3. Brian Elliot (26 saves on 27 shots) – Moose was every bit as good as Bishop and frustrated the Stars all night.
