The Dallas Stars held off a winless Arizona Coyotes to sweep the home-and-home series and record their third straight victory in a back and forth game.
Dallas top center, Tyler Seguin, continued his strong play and scored two crucial goals in the third period.
Dallas began the game with a ceremonial decision in putting Martin Hanzal, the former 10-year Coyote, on the top line to start the game. Head Coach Ken Hitchcock also opted to have Mattias Janmark center the second line, moving Jason Spezza to right wing, presumably to get him going in the scoring department.
Arizona’s top center and off-season trade acquisition, Derek Stepan, cashed in right after Dallas’ first penalty. As the penalty had been killed off, Arizona caught Jamie Oleksiak playing as a de-facto winger before the Stars could change.
Oleksiak got the nod over Julius Honka, who was a healthy scratch. The lineup move didn’t quite pay off as Oleksiak made a couple key blunders.
The Stars immediately seized control after the initial Arizona goal and scored twice within the span of one minute. Stars captain Jamie Benn scored on the power play and finished the night with three points.
Desperate to get their first victory, the Coyotes hung around all night because of the inspiring play from top center, Derek Stepan.
Stepan was dangerously close to locking down a hat trick late in the second period after a Radulov giveaway left Dallas’ defense completely out of position. Ben Bishop made his best save in a Stars jersey with a desperation poke check to keep the game tied at 2-2 headed into the second intermission.

Bishop didn’t exactly post great numbers, but he made several key saves in the third period, including stonewalling a breakaway from Max Domi. He was also stalwart on the penalty kill to help Dallas kill four out of four penalties.
